With light rail measure passing, a reminder of what you'll pay

With Regional Proposition 1 passing the focus turns to what's next with the regional light rail expansion known as Sound Transit 3.

About half of the measure is funded with new taxes that begin taking effect in January.

In the Sound Transit district, which is everything but rural King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, sales taxes will go up, adding 50 cents to a $100 purchase.

Sound Transit says car tabs will go up $80 dollars a year on a car worth $10,000.

And property taxes will go up $100 per year on a $400,000 home.

The typical household will see a total tax increase of about $326 per year.

The centerpiece of ST3 is 62 new miles of light rail.

The first newly-funded light rail lines open in 2024, and the full rollout will take until 2041.

King County Executive and Sound Transit Board Chair Dow Constantine says planning for bus rapid transit on I-405 and State Route 522 will begin this month.

Commuters should see the first bus and park and ride projects done as early as 2019.

"Really early improvements that are going to help get people out of traffic and get them to their jobs even as we are building a complete regional network," Constantine said.
