Washington's first slide-style boat launch opens in Sumner

VIDEO: Pierce County opens new boat slide

SUMNER, Wash. — Washington state’s first slide-style boat launch opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning at Riverside Park in Sumner.

Officials said the boat slide will be used by recreational boaters, but also gives an additional entry point for search and rescue personnel.

"Boat entry to the Puyallup River will be much easier and safer," Pierce County Councilwoman Pam Roach said in a news release. "This unique boat slide provides access to the Puyallup River where it wasn't possible in the past."

Pierce County Public Works constructed the boat slide. Similar slides are prevalent in Oregon.

"We are also working on other access points to the river," Roach said.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife recently opened access to the Puyallup River at Gravel Bar located near the end of 116th Street East near Orting that officials said will remain open during fishing season.
