Washington State Ferries warning riders of delays, cancellations over Labor Day weekend

SEATTLE — Washington State Ferries is warning riders of major delays and even cancellations over Labor Day weekend.

Long lines and ferry delays are normal during the summer months, and WSF says this weekend will be no exception due to COVID cases and a labor shortage.

“I wouldn’t be afraid to take a ferry this weekend, but I would consider where I’m going. If I’m able to drive around for instance, if I’m going out to the San Juan Islands, book that hotel for an extra day, make sure I’ve got a place to stay,” said Ian Sterling, spokesperson for WSF.

The maritime sector is facing a local and international staffing shortfall.

“They’re not just directing your car where to go, these are highly trained merchant marines that are credentialed by the coastguard,” Sterling said.

The delta variant isn’t making things any easier.

According to WSF, any crew members who get sick must stay home. Those exposed to COVID-19 are required to quarantine.

Staff who are healthy and ready to work are already strained and putting in a lot of overtime.

There’s also an upcoming vaccine requirement for state employees coming by mid-October - unvaccinated employees cannot work for the state anymore without an exemption.

Sterling says not everyone is happy about it.

There’s also speculation of a sickout which could disrupt thousands of travelers.

“We’ve heard the rumors that people may choose not to show up to work - that could keep a vessel from sailing,” Sterling said.

He says ferry management and the union are in agreement this is not a legal form of protest.

“Ferries are notoriously on time and reliable - and unfortunately we’ve slipped some here in the last few months,” Sterling said.

Sterling says if you’re looking for a solution - walk on or opt for an early morning or late night ride.
