Washington State Ferries plans to rework schedule in Vashon Island run

Today, commuters are expected to pack a meeting for ferry schedule changes.

Washington State Ferries is reworking the schedule for the Vashon-Fauntleroy-Southworth route for the first time in 15 years.

People living on Vashon say this new schedule, cutting a few sailings late in the day, would impact them. They've been complaining they have another idea, and they claim Ferries officials aren't listening.     '

It's being done to accommodate for more traffic to Southworth and give more loading time in Fauntleroy.

Trips now taking 20 minutes would take 45.

People living on Vashon say an idea they have would still keep both stops and make that trip 35 minutes instead, because they can't deal with the cuts.

"Adding extra time makes it harder in a really tight labor market for us to find the right people to work in our businesses and it's already hard enough because we're on an island," said Cheryl Lubbery, who works at Nashi Orchards.

Tonight's meeting is happening from 4:30-7 p.m. at Fauntleroy Church. A crowd is expected.

The changes are scheduled to take place in March.
