Experience the 'big one' in quake simulator at Westlake

Experience the 'big one' in quake simula — An earthquake simulation in Seattle Tuesday will give people an idea of what a massive quake would feel like, as emergency experts try to get people to prepare for a catastrophe.

The simulator called the Big Shaker is a 22-foot trailer that will be set up at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle.

The inside is set up to look like a room, classroom or office work space, and while sitting or standing inside, the whole room will start to rumble and shake.

On Tuesday, it's going to be set to simulate an 8.0 earthquake.

One dramatic difference from what would happen in a real quake is that all the furniture in the simulator is bolted to the walls and floor.

The demonstration is organized by the city and is meant to get people to take action and prepare for a massive earthquake.

Earlier this year, police and emergency management agencies held a massive, week long earthquake drill throughout the region.

The goal of the Westlake Park event is for people to think about their own response during and following a large quake.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public can try out the Big Shaker, learn to make emergency kits and learn how to organize a neighborhood response to an emergency.
