Friends and family gathered Sunday afternoon to remember Kristopher Fitzpatrick, the man shot and killed Monday by Aberdeen police.
"He was big-hearted. He'd help anybody, give anybody the shirt off his back. Nobody deserves to die, especially him. Absolutely nobody deserves to die," said Jon Parker, a friend of Fitzpatrick.
Aberdeen police said Fitzpatrick had multiple felony warrants out for his arrest.
They spotted him Monday and tried stopping him.
Officers said he told them he wasn't going back to prison, ran, and, at some point, pulled out a gun.
"He had a firearm on his person. He brandished the firearm, pointed it at the officer, which resulted in the shooting," said Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott.
Investigators released a picture of Fitzpatrick on Thursday. They said it shows him holding a gun in his right hand.
They also released an audio recording between police and dispatchers. In the recording, a police officer can be heard telling someone to "drop the [expletive] gun."
Fitzpatrick's friends don't believe he had a gun.
"I've known the guy for four years. In the middle of ugliness, I've never seen him with a gun," said Jessica Anderson.
Fitzpatrick's friends said they didn't see a gun in his hands in a video of the shooting that was posted to social media.
In the video, Fitzpatrick paces around the parking lot as a cop car pulls up, but it's hard to tell if there's anything in his hands.
"I've probably watched the video over 100 times, and I've never seen no weapon in his hands," said Parker. "He was an active user, but that doesn't mean you kill somebody."
Police said they recovered a gun near the suspect after the shooting.
The investigation is being handled by an outside agency.
