UW: 7,000 steps daily may be optimal

University of Washington researchers said Thursday that about 7,000 daily steps, and not the regularly quoted 10,000 steps, may be the new sweet spot for optimal health, according to two new studies.

“As long as you’re logging 7,000 steps, studies have shown you’re decreasing your risk of early death,” said Dr. Cindy Lin, a UW Medicine rehabilitation specialist.

Increasing your daily steps from 3,000 to 4,000 or 5,000 was shown to have lasting health benefits.

The UW study also noted a 15-minute walk after a Zoom meeting was shown to decrease blood sugar levels.
