Three dogs found starving and neglected at Tacoma home

TACOMA, Wash. — Three dogs are recovering after they were found neglected and extremely emaciated at a Tacoma home.

Tacoma Animal Control was called on July 15 by someone who was concerned about the dogs. Animal control officers found three starving dogs on the property.

According to a news release from the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, the 3-year-old dogs, Scooby, Max, and Winston, were rehomed after their owner was placed into a long-term care facility. The person left in charge of the dogs was unable to care for them due to mental limitations.

The dogs were brought to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, where they are recovering from starvation, significant hair loss, skin infections, parasites, and toenails that had grown so long it was painful for the animals to walk.

“These dogs are extremely emaciated, so we are focusing on helping them gain weight and getting them the nutrition they need,” said the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County’s Veterinarian Dr. Lauren Henderson. “It will be about a six-week minimum process to get them back to a healthy weight.”

Humane Society staff said the dogs were scared when they arrived at the shelter. Staff and volunteers are working to gain their trust.

Donations from the community are urgently needed for the dogs’ ongoing medical care. Donations are being accepted on the shelter’s website.
