Teens arrested in carjacking investigation after police pursuit

Two teens suspected in a carjacking and police chase were arrested Sunday night in Pierce County.

Sheriff’s deputies said a.22 caliber handgun and loaded magazine was found near one of the suspects.

The incident began in the 10900 block of D. Street East in Parkland. Two men said they pulled over to talk to friends when a man came out of the bushes and approached their Toyota Corolla. They said he pointed a handgun at them and said, “this can go one of two ways.”

The victims ran as a second suspect approached, and Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies found the car in the parking lot of the Monterra Apartments in the 400 block of 111th St. Ct. E. The driver refused to stop for police lights and drove around a tow truck trying to block his path, investigators said.

Deputies found the Corolla dumped in an alley near the Church for All Nations and contained the area. At 9:24 p.m., one of the suspects was seen running in a field east of the church at 111 112th St E in Tacoma. Deputies said the suspect matched the driver’s description.

He refused to give his name or birthdate, but said “I drive pretty good for someone who didn’t go to driver’s ed,” investigators said.

At 9:49 p.m., deputies found the second suspect under a tarp in thick grass and located the handgun and loaded magazine nearby.

The teens, age 18 and 15, were arrested. Investigators believe the 18-year-old was the driver and the 15-year-old, who had two unrelated warrants, was the passenger.
