Man arrested in drive-by shooting, pedestrian-vehicle collision in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — A man has been arrested in a drive-by shooting and pedestrian-vehicle collision that were later determined to be connected, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at 1:38 a.m. Saturday, after South Sound 911 received a call from a woman who said she had just been shot in a drive-by shooting.

Police arrived at the scene in the 3500 block of South Union Avenue, where they found the 32-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries near a Tacoma Public Utilities guard shack.

They immediately started lifesaving measures before transporting her to a local hospital.

A 31-year-old male was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but was uninjured. He told police that the driver had just made a left-hand turn onto South Union Avenue from South 35th Street when the suspect vehicle pulled up alongside them and shot at them.

He described the suspect as a white male in a black pickup truck.

While police were responding to the shooting, a Tacoma police sergeant witnessed a 24-year-old man being struck by a black pickup truck in the 5200 block of South Tacoma Way.

The sergeant called for backup when he saw the driver of the suspect vehicle brandishing a handgun.

Police started lifesaving measures on the male victim before transporting him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers were able to detain the 47-year-old male suspect driver without incident.

He was booked into the Pierce County Jail for vehicular assault, driving while under the influence, and assault in the first degree.

Detectives later determined that the suspect arrested in the collision was also the suspect in the earlier drive-by shooting.

Additional charges of attempted murder and first degree assault have been forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office for charging.
