Man in custody after standoff in West Seattle

SEATTLE — Streets were closed in West Seattle Friday for a standoff with a disturbed man on Harbor Avenue Southwest and Southwest Florida Street.

The man was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m.

Police were first called at 1:30 a.m. about someone screaming outside and honking a car horn.

Investigators believe the same man broke into a business, which was then surrounded by SWAT officers.

Harbor Avenue Southwest was closed to all traffic between Fairmount Avenue Southwest and Southwest Spokane Street.

The shirtless man was at first inside the business yelling out a window at officers. He then started hanging out of the window and smashing glass in a greenhouse-type window below him with a pole.

He then climbed out of the window and got on top of the greenhouse window, at times sitting and at other times lying down. He had an object in his hand that appeared to be a shard of glass.

The man was threatening to hurt himself. Police said they were not trying to rush an end to the situation and were focused on getting the man help and making sure the situation ended peacefully.

The man was heard screaming that no one wanted to talk to him and police responded, saying they did.
