SPS superintendent Denise Juneau stepping down after contract ends in June

Seattle Public Schools superintendent Denise Juneau said Tuesday that she is not seeking a contract extension and will leave the district in June 2021.

She released a statement saying the school board must “choose a superintendent with whom they can co-lead and move forward together.”

The announcement comes after the NAACP and other community leaders called on SPS to terminate her contact in October.

The group said during her time as superintendent, she has encouraged racism and sexism throughout the district.

Juneau told KIRO 7 she was surprised by the complaints because she was so committed to advancing racial equity.

“I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead and learn here. I will carry the spirit and lessons of this community and experience with me, and hope that our time spent together has helped strengthen the foundation for the continued growth for all our truly remarkable students,” Juneau wrote in a statement.
