The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating after a small plane crashed Wednesday afternoon in Port Orchard.
South Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded to a report of an aircraft emergency before 4 p.m.
According to the FAA, a single-engine Cessna C150 crashed in a tree in a Port Orchard neighborhood after departing from the Vaughan Ranch Airfield.
When deputies arrived, they and some neighbors helped the pilot get out through the bottom of the plane, which was on its side. The pilot was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center and is in critical condition, officials said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
