Skip airport lines and stay local with one-tank trips

Memorial Day travel is booming once again, so if you want to skip the airport lines and stay local, you’re in luck, as Washington has amazing options for places you can get to on one tank of gas.

One option is to head to the mountains. Crystal Mountain Resort is extending its spring season. The resort will stay open for weekend activities through June 12.

You can also hop on a ferry to one of the state’s beautiful islands such as Bainbridge, Whidbey or the San Juans.

Another option helps support a local company like Taylor Shellfish Farms, a family business going back five generations.

The company started 130 years ago and now has oyster bars or shellfish markets in the Capitol Hill, Queen Anne and Pioneer Square neighborhoods of Seattle as well as in Bow and Shelton.

KIRO 7 spoke with Taylor Shellfish marketing coordinator Jada Pearson, who laid out a fun trip heading north to Bow or Bellingham.

It starts off with checking out bakeries and eateries in La Conner and Mount Vernon before hiking the Oyster Dome in the Chuckanut Mountains. It ends at the Taylor Shellfish Samish Bay oyster farm in Bow, where you can learn how to shuck oysters, enjoy fresh seafood at the waterfront picnic area or take fresh seafood to go.

“Specifically, that location being so special to us, it sits right out on one of our oyster farms, so you’re able to see an active farm as you’re eating the oysters, which is a truly a really unique experience and levels up the authentic tide to table experience,” said Pearson.

Another idea is to visit Mount Rainier National Park where you’ll find beautiful landscapes along hiking trails.
