SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a contract extension with Russell Wilson, the quarterback announced early Tuesday morning.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the extension is worth $140 million over four years with a $65 million signing bonus -- making Wilson the highest paid player in the NFL.

Wilson was entering the final year of the 4-year $87.6 million extension he signed in July 2015. The new extension ties Wilson to the Seahawks through the 2023 season.

Mark Rodgers, Wilson's agent, told Schefter of the contract extension, "At the end of the day, my guy wants to live, work and thrive in Seattle. Loves this town and it's fans. He compromised to stay here. I respect that."

Wilson has started every game of his seven-year career for the Seahawks after being drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

In 2013, Wilson led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history with a 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos.

In 112 regular season games, Wilson has passed for 196 touchdowns and 63 interceptions and has added another 3,651 yards and 16 touchdowns rushing.
