Firefighters spent several hours Wednesday working to extinguish a scrap metal fire at a business in Woodinville that sent thick smoke into the air – reportedly blowing as far as North Seattle.
Firefighters responded to a report of a commercial fire at Schnitzer Steel in the 6200 block of 238th Street Southeast just after 6 p.m. and spent five hours on the scene.
A pile of metal, Styrofoam and rubber caught fire on the property, according to firefighters, who said it was reported nearly 20 minutes after workers had left for the day.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation warned drivers that smoke was blowing across SR 522 during the evening commute.
People who live in the area were advised to close doors and windows because of the strong odor of smoke and burning materials.
The Seattle Fire Department said that it received reports of smoke reaching North Seattle neighborhoods.
No injuries were reported, and firefighters were able to contain the fire to the scrap pile.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
