Rocks thrown from I-5 overpass smash car

SEATTLE — State troopers and Seattle police are investigating after someone threw rocks off an overpass and hit cars on I-5 in Seattle on Sunday.

A rock smashed through Gordie Mjelde's windshield as he headed northbound at 55 mph. The rock missed his head by inches, passed between the seats, shattered the console and ended up in the back seat.

"This thing could have killed me," said Mjelde, holding the rock. "An 8 1/2-pound rock, and I'm traveling 50-60 mph, coming through the windshield."

Mjelde said the rock had hit a few inches over, he'd be dead. He was able to keep control of his car and exited at Mercer. The Washington State Patrol is investigating, and so is the Seattle Police Department.

According to the State Patrol, three cars were hit by rocks and one car ran over a rock. No one was arrested, and whoever threw the rocks has not been found.

Mjelde wants to warn other drivers.

"Just to let people know and be aware of what's going on 'cause this can happen to you because I never thought in a million years this could happen to me."

"I'm lucky. I should go and buy a lotto ticket. That's how lucky I am."
