RENTON, Wash. — Renton Firefighters Local 864 members climbed stairs nonstop for seven hours Saturday at the Renton Landing to raise money and awareness for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Firefighters climbed portable step mills in full firefighting protection equipment to demonstrate the conditions they will face in the 2018 Scott Firefighter Stairclimber at the Columbia Center in March.
"It's approximately 60 pounds worth of gear, so we're climbing in a tight stairwell...It's really hot and it's pretty difficult," Renton firefighter Jamie Durkan said Saturday.
The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb is the world's largest on-air stair climb competition, where firefighters wear 50 pounds of gear as they climb the Columbia Towers' 69 flights of stairs.
