Port Townsend man arrested after allegedly molesting 6-year-old in Canada

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — A Port Townsend man was arrested Monday on suspicion of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place, U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran announced.

John Timothy Whicher, 62, is expected to make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Tacoma on Tuesday.

In a criminal complaint, the U.S. Attorney's Office accused Whicher of taking a 6-year-old child to stay at a family cabin in Ontario without informing the child's custodial parent.

Whicher then allegedly molested the child and told the child to keep it a secret, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The child informed the custodial parent about the alleged sexual conduct and the parent then reported it to police, officials said.

Engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The case is now being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
