Police search for driver who hit, killed cyclist on his 34th birthday

A family is searching for answers after their brother was hit and killed while riding his bike in Federal Way Friday.

"None of us got to wish him a happy birthday,” said Katelin Rolph.

A day that should've been a celebration turned into a day of mourning.

Tyler Rolph was riding his bike down Pacific Avenue South near 279th Street shortly after midnight Friday when a driver hit him and took off.

"We're all sleeping, my brother's dying in the middle of the road,” said Katelin.

Tyler had just turned 34.

"He was a brother, a son, a dad, an uncle, an amazing man. It's just devastating that this has happened,” said Tracy Rolph.

Tyler’s 10-year-old son is now forced to grow up without a father.

"It was a really hard thing to tell him, to see the look in eyes, to know that he would never see his dad again,” said Katelin.

Police said a Good Samaritan spotted Tyler’s body in the road and flagged down an ambulance. Medics performed CPR, but couldn't save him.

“To see a sheet lying in the middle of the road and a mangled bicycle, I didn't want to know his injuries,” said Katelin.

Police are searching for a gray early 2000s model Ford Ranger pickup, which may be involved. The grill has a black diamond or hexagon pattern and may be damaged or missing.

The truck was last seen driving westbound on South Dash Point Road.

"I don't understand how a person could ever hit someone and leave. He could still here if you had just stopped,” said Tracy.

Now, the family’s wish is closure. They want to find out who hit and killed their only brother, 34 years to the day he was born.

"How could you be so heartless?" said Katelin.

Anyone with information is asked to call Federal Way police.

The family set up a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expenses.
