Police: Homeless felon pummels man, breaks van windows

SEATTLE — A homeless man who has four felonies in Florida and two in Washington is accused of beating a man with a board and then smashing the windows of the his van in the SoDo area of Seattle, charging documents say.

Prosecutors say that early in the morning of May 10, Frederick J. Estes, 41, who was angry about something, approached the victim’s van, where the victim and his girlfriend were sitting, and tried to pull the victim out of the van.

When Estes eventually succeeded, he punched the victim in the face and torso multiple times and then picked up a board and hit the victim at least twice in the face and multiple times in the torso, according to Seattle police.

Court documents say the victim managed to get back into the van and Estes used a board to shatter the van’s back, driver's side and front passenger windows.

When the glass shattered, a piece flew into the victim’s eye, which later required him to go to the hospital, according to police.  Estes then hit the victim in the face with a board through a broken van window before the victim and his girlfriend were able to drive away, probable cause documents say.

During an interview about the attack, the victim’s girlfriend told police that Estes was angry because she had turned down his romantic advances.

At the time police interviewed the victim, who was at Virginia Mason getting treatment for his injuries, Estes had already been arrested on two warrants from Seattle Municipal Court, police reports say.

Estes was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree malicious mischief on May 17.

Criminal records show Estes has four felony convictions in Florida for uttering a forged instrument, (a charge related to a forged or altered financial or legal document), two instances of grand theft and dealing in stolen property.  He also was convicted of felony battery of an inmate and burglary in Washington.
