Phone scam targets Seattle City Light customers

Seattle Municipal Archives

SEATTLE — Seattle City Light said hundreds of customers have reported receiving calls from scam artists over the past several days claiming to be utility bill collectors.

City Light said the scam is run like this: "The con artist claims a customer is overdue on a bill and must make an immediate payment, often by prepaid debit card, in order to stop a crew from shutting off the power in the next 30 minutes. Sometimes they even fake the number on the caller ID."

City Light said it never demands immediate payment over the phone and customers who are behind on their bill receive at least two letters by mail before the disconnection process starts.

Anyone who receives a call for immediate payment should hang up, City Light said.

All questions about an account should be directed to 206-684-3000.
