Parking prices go up in some parts of Seattle

SEATTLE — New on-street parking rates are in effect for the city of Seattle, so anyone who uses the parking kiosks or apps will be paying more starting Monday, Oct. 24.

For some areas, the new rates will mean a significant increase where parking usually fills up fast. Some of the highest rates could be paid in Fremont, Belltown and the Denny Triangle.

In a blog post, the Seattle Department of Transportation said the hike should create some open parking spaces on each block.

It will cost $3.50 an hour in the evening to park in Capitol Hill South. For the Chinatown-International district, the cost will ring up $3 an hour, and for the Ballard Core, it will be about $2.50 an hour.

Parking rates will vary depending on location and time.

Seattle hiked the rates in summer 2021 and in July. This latest hike didn’t sit well with a Seattle commuter named Dave who left the 24 Hour Fitness near the Denny Triangle area Monday morning.

“It’s kind of expensive already. My opinion: They don’t really need to do that, they need to find money somewhere else to fix these potholes in the streets where you park,” he said.

Another hike could come this spring and SDOT does implement rate hikes in the spring, summer and fall if deemed necessary.

“Overall, rates remain low at many locations. Out of 90 total locations and times, we’re adjusting 36 rates – 6 rate decreases at locations that are not as full as they were in the early summer, and 30 rates increases where parking capacity is full or nearly full,” SDOT said in a blog post.

The agency also said that parking rates are staying the same or decreasing at two-thirds of locations and times of the day.

The most common rate remains $0.50 per hour, primarily in the morning. Afternoons and evenings remain busier and will see the bulk of rate increases.

The blog post incorporated the following table to list locations and rates, and said there will also be an interactive map on the SDOT website.
