Overnight closures scheduled for I-5 in Tacoma during week of June 20

TACOMA, Wash. — Drivers who travel Interstate 5 in Tacoma are being warned to plan for several overnight closures that are scheduled for the week of June 20.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said crews will be installing a large sign over southbound I-5 and will be putting down lane striping on the northbound lanes, putting the freeway into its final configuration.

Schedule as follows:

Wednesday, June 22 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday, June 23:

  • All lanes of southbound I-5 will close at exit 135 to Portland Avenue. Drivers will detour to westbound State Route 509 to southbound I-705 and back to southbound I-5.
  • Thursday, June 23 is a backup date, should the work get canceled.

Friday, June 24 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday, June 25; Saturday, June 25 from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday, June 26:

  • All lanes of northbound I-5 will close at exit 133. Drivers will detour to I-705, to SR-509 to Port of Tacoma Road and back to northbound I-5.
  • Travelers on eastbound SR-16 merging to northbound I-5 will follow the same detour. The eastbound SR-16 HOV lane will be closed.

Overnight ramp closures, I-705 and SR 7 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from:

  • 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 24 to 5 a.m. Saturday, June 25;
  • 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 25 to 6 a.m. Sunday, June 26.

WSDOT also said the 28th Street onramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 24 to 6 a.m. Saturday, June 25.

Drivers coming from Thurston are being advised to consider using eastbound SR-512 to northbound SR-167 to westbound SR-18, or I-405 to reconnect to northbound I-5.

WSDOT said once crews reopen the road on Sunday, there will be six new lanes for drivers going northbound on I-5 near the Interstate 705 interchange. However, the new HOV lanes are not expected to open until July.

One thing worth noting is that the work is weather-dependent, meaning the schedule could change.
