MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — The North Cascades Highway, also known as SR 20, is reopening Wednesday after a months-long closure for snow and road repairs.
The Washington State Department of Transportation made the announcement Tuesday that crews completed a final avalanche control effort Monday and that after a few final repairs, the road will be open for the season Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Anyone who wants to be there for the opening is asked to social distance and wear a mask.
The highway closed for the winter back on November 13, and crews from both sides of the state route worked to remove the snow and make repairs.
Last year, the highway reopened on May 12, while in 2019 the gates swung open April 18. The earliest opening was March 10, 2005.
