No live Blue Angels or fireworks shows at this year’s Seafair, organizers say

SEATTLE — Organizers with Seafair announced on Wednesday this year’s plans for the summer celebration.

Officials said this year’s events will be a mix of live and virtual, and will also be following the state’s Phase 3 guidelines.

“Seafair is proud to be a part of a community that is taking steps together to ensure future celebrations can occur safely,” organizers said.

Seafair did confirm with KIRO 7 that there will be no Blue Angels and no live fireworks.

Here are the following events:

July 4 -- Seafair Summer 4th Presented by HomeStreet: Seafair will show a favorite past fireworks show over Lake Union. The broadcast will also look ahead to what Seafair has to offer this summer and what new things fans can look forward to in the summer of 2022.

Milk Carton Derby: People will be invited to build boats at home, either large or small creations, and share their designs to win prizes for Creativity/Design and Engineering/Propulsion.

July 25 -- Seafair Triathlon: The Seafair Triathlon will be a combination of live and virtual participation, based upon the competitor’s comfort level. The 2021 Seafair Triathlon will take place at Sammamish State Park. Final route, registration and further details available on Seafair.org in May.

The Alaska Airlines Torchlight Parade: Each week in July and August, area neighborhoods will be nominated to win a Seafair caravan including the Clowns, Pirates, Commodores, Parade Marshals, the Champion Hydroplane Miss HomeStreet, Vintage Hydros and other surprises. Seafair will also have parade-themed activities online including a float-building contest, coloring activities and other projects for all ages.

July 31 -- Seafair Torchlight Run: Similar to the Triathlon, the 5K Torchlight Run will be a combination of live and virtual participation, as chosen by the registrants. Final route, registration and further details available on Seafair.org in May.

Aug. 2-6 -- Seattle Fleet Week: During the week-long nautical celebration, Seafair will host over 100 Fleet Week and Boeing Maritime activities online. From ship tours, interviews with Blue Angels pilots, and so much more, every fan will find something to enjoy.

The Boeing Air Show: Activities include a fully simulated performance by the U.S. Blue Angels - complete with narration and an appearance by the C-130 aircraft, Fat Albert.

The HomeStreet Bank Cup: This summer will include hydroplane racing featuring the actual drivers competing from their homes racing on the famous Lake Washington course.

“We are proud to be part of a community that that is safely emerging from the pandemic and coming back together,” said Eric Corning, president and CEO of Seafair. “We are grateful for the dedication of our government leaders, first responders, and front-line workers, and recognize the sacrifices made by the people who live and work here. Doing our part to maintain the progress is simply the responsible action for Seafair to take. Though aspects of the festival are not live, it is important to the Seafair staff, board, and countless volunteers to stay active in the community bringing people together to celebrate within COVID-19 guidelines.”

Seafair was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
