Neighborhood evacuated after shots fired call; 'improvised explosives' found at Silverdale home

KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — After an hourslong wait, the all-clear was given for one Silverdale neighborhood that was evacuated after a call of shots fired Friday.

When Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Peony and Hydrangea streets, they found what appeared to be explosives inside one home.

Neighbors in the area were first told when authorities arrived that they needed to remain inside for their safety. “Pretty soon, they came knocking again and said, 'You need to get out of your house,'” said Mary Galloway.

“Obviously, that's concerning, especially living so close,” said J.J. Fairchild, who also lives on the street.

Deputies were responding to a call of shots fired and “a man in crisis” shortly before noon Friday when they spotted what appeared to be homemade explosive devices. The Sheriff’s Office called for help from several explosive ordnance disposal teams, who determined the devices could be deadly.

“Our explosives experts (are) here from the FBI, ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) is here, NCIS, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Washington State Patrol and the Sheriff’s Office,” said Kitsap sheriff’s Lt. Earl Smith. The man living at the home was cooperative and taken to a nearby hospital for examination, according to Smith. It’s not clear if he’ll face criminal charges.

Fairchild said though he lives nearby, he doesn't know the man well. “Not so much. I mean, like, in passing, like any neighbor,” said Fairchild. Asked if there had been any problems, he said, “Never had any issues.”

Once authorities got a search warrant, they found “hazardous materials” and chemicals in the man’s home and removed them for safe disposal.

A bomb squad official at the scene said they found “improvised explosives” inside the home.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported about 6:10 p.m. that all roads were reopened and that the neighborhood was safe.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service was also called to investigate.
