Natural gas leak causes evacuations in South Seattle

SEATTLE — A natural gas leak at a home in South Seattle caused the evacuation of nearby houses.

The leak was reported at about 8:40 a.m. Monday.

Nearby homes in the 10300 block of Rainier and some of the 10400 block were evacuated as a precaution.

All lanes of Rainier Avenue South were blocked at 75th Ave. S.  As of 10:45 a.m., Seattle fire said the leak was "secured" and crews were starting to demobilize units.

By 11:55 a.m., the northbound lanes were back open, but the southbound lanes remained blocked.

Crews from Puget Sound Energy and Seattle fire responded. Video from Chopper 7 showed that a crew had dug up part of a sidewalk next to a home.
