More ‘Revive I-5’ lane closures scheduled for this holiday weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation continues to work toward completing the Revive I-5 project in Seattle by the end of this summer, and there will be lane reductions during the Independence Day weekend.

WSDOT will be reducing lanes of southbound Interstate 5 between the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Interstate 90 and South Holgate Street.

Additionally, both westbound and eastbound Interstate 90 off-ramps to southbound Interstate 5 will be closed.

Drivers should expect heavy congestion in the area when work starts at 9:30 p.m. Friday to 6:30 a.m. Monday.

WSDOT is beginning their lane closures later than usual on Friday, due to expected holiday travel for drivers that weren’t able to leave earlier that day.

Also, drivers should expect heavier than average congestion before and after Mariners games at T-Mobile Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Seattle Storm have a game at the Climate Pledge Arena on Friday night, too.

WSDOT suggested drivers consider alternative routes like Interstate 405, taking the light rail or bus, and traveling before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m.

“Usually, we don’t work major events or holiday weekends if it can be avoided, but after many discussions, we believe it can and has to be done,” said WSDOT communications consultant Tom Pearce. “We recognize the timing of this work over the Pride and Independence Day weekends is less than ideal, but we’re facing some very difficult decisions.”
