Man with apparent need for speed hits tree, tries to flee, police say

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — A man who was speeding and spinning his tires in a mall parking lot refused to give up even when his car was blocked in by Chelan County deputies, police said.

On Saturday at 11:17 p.m., deputies were in the 500 block of Valley Mall Parkway when they heard a car revving its engine and squealing the tires in the south end of the Wenatchee Valley Mall parking lot.

Deputies said they saw the car driving north through the mall lot at estimated speeds of 60 mph.

When deputies caught up with the car and tried to stop it, the driver fled and ran the car into a tree on French Avenue near the north mall parking lot, according to authorities.

Deputies blocked the car in and tried to arrest the driver, but he continued to try to get away by accelerating and spinning the tires, police said.

The man was arrested after a deputy deployed his stun gun.

The 22-year-old East Wenatchee man was arrested and booked into Chelan County Jail for investigation of attempting to elude police, DUI, operating a vehicle with no ignition interlock device, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended/revoked license.

The man was the only occupant of the car.
