When four deputies and a lieutenant arrived at the home, the man could be seen holding a long gun on the second floor of his home.
A friend of the man arrived and tried to negotiate with him. After about three hours, the man exited the house with his gun. When his friend tried to intervene, a struggle began and deputies tried to take the man into custody.
During the struggle, the man fired multiple shots, hitting his friend in the leg. At that point, an Island County deputy shot man, who died at the scene.
The friend was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. One deputy was treated and released with a minor hand injury.
Island County Sheriff's Office contacted the Skagit Multiple Agency Response Team, which is made up of detectives from several Skagit County police agencies, to begin conducting an investigation.
