Man taken into custody after shooting, high-speed chase in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — A man was taken into custody by deputies following a high-speed chase after another man was shot in an encounter with a suspected car prowler Thursday night in Tacoma, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a 911 caller who reported before 11 p.m. about a shooting in the parking lot of the Coventry Court Apartments on 9th Avenue East.

Investigators said a man was shot multiple times while confronting another person, who allegedly was prowling around the man's car.

The suspected shooter then fled in a Mustang, deputies said.

Deputies said the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, deputies saw the Mustang and tried to pull it over but the suspect sped up to over 70 mph.

Deputies said the suspect continued to drive at a high rate of speed, running through stoplights and stop signs.

Due to safety concerns, deputies discontinued their pursuit when the suspect drove down a ramp and traveled in the wrong direction on I-5.

Shortly afterward, the suspect turned around and drove north on I-5 at high speeds and passed the Tacoma Mall area and downtown Tacoma.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect got off I-5, drove up a hill on Portland Avenue, hit a car and came to a stop.

The suspect got out of the car, ran away and was later taken into custody after he surrendered.

The 27-year-old man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and hit-and-run.
