SILVERDALE, Wash. — A Kitsap County man escaped his burning home by climbing onto the roof and then jumping to the ground, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue said.

Crews were called to the home in the 16000 block of Olympic View Road Northwest in Silverdale at 2:16 a.m. on Friday.

The first person to call 911 about the fire was a neighbor. A second call then came in from the homeowner, who said he had made it onto his roof and was going to jump.

Once on the ground, he told dispatchers that he was unhurt.

Crews arrived to find the two-story home engulfed in flames. The fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire, which drew more resources to the scene.

While crews fought the fire, the homeowner was checked out by medics and was confirmed to be OK.

Crews said they had the fire under control by 2:51 a.m.

The homeowner said his smoke alarms woke him up, but when he checked the hallway and found flames, he was forced to escape through his bathroom window onto the roof.

The Kitsap County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

The homeowner will stay with his family.

Crews remained at the scene to check for and put out any flare-ups.
