Man burglarizes garage then falls asleep, deputies say

NEAR BLACK DIAMOND, Wash. — The King County Sheriff’s Office said a man burglarized a garage just outside the city of Black Diamond, and then fell asleep in his car across the street.

On Sunday at 2:18 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a call about a burglary in the 22000 block of Southeast Sawyer Ridge Way.

The caller said someone had entered his garage and stole some items, including a gun, and that the suspect was now asleep in a black Toyota Scion parked across the street.

Arriving deputies turned on their patrol car lights and told the sleeping man to step out of the car but received no response. When they approached the Scion, they saw the man asleep in the driver’s seat.

Police said they saw a pocketknife, small sheet of tinfoil and a flashlight on his lap.

When deputies opened the driver’s side door, the man awoke and was arrested. After he was in custody, deputies noticed a pile of mail in the front passenger seat with various names and addresses that did not match the man’s information.

They also found several of the homeowner’s items, including a leaf blower and a gun.

Deputies said footage from the homeowner’s surveillance camera showed the man enter the garage and take a gun, a STIHL leaf blower and other items. He then walked out of the garage and to his vehicle.

The man was taken to the King County Jail, where he was booked for investigation of residential burglary, possession of stolen property, and theft of a firearm.
