Large cranes arrive at Port of Seattle

SEATTLE — The Port of Seattle got a large delivery on Sunday.

Four cranes from China standing 316 feet tall with a 240-foot boom moved to Terminal 5.

They are some of the largest on the entire West Coast.

Officials with the port said the cranes can handle the largest container vessels currently in operation around the world.

“We’re going to move more containers per ship. So we can increase volume — you know, the world is growing,” said the port president, Fred Felleman. “The 18 to 20 thousand containers per ship is where we’re gonna max out for quite some time.”

Officials are hoping the cranes will make the port more competitive, creating jobs and economic opportunities.

Up in Everett, KIRO 7 has seen the impact big port upgrades can have on the industry.

The Port of Everett bought a pair of massive cranes a couple of years ago from Los Angeles.

It was part of a $57 million project upgrade at the South Terminal.
