KIRKLAND, Wash. — Kirkland is looking for more diverse voices to participate in city government.
It has launched a new program called the Kirkland Initiative to promote civic engagement.
The program is an interactive 8-week series that will teach the foundation of the city’s government and functions, and how residents can interact with the decision process.
It’s a push for more LGBTQIA+ community members — as well as Black, indigenous, and people of color — to participate in local government decisions.
“We’re going to seek out voices that don’t normally come to the city, that don’t think of coming to the city to effect change, and we’re going to reach out and recruit them, which will provide more diversity and opportunity for the people of our community,” said Deputy City Manager Jim Lopez.
City officials say the area is growing and they need more people involved to continue a community-based decision-making process.
