Deputies search for driver in fatal Lakewood hit-and-run

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Deputies are searching for a driver after a fatal hit-and-run crash Tuesday afternoon in Lakewood.

Investigators said at 1:12 p.m., deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian was hit on the Freedom Way overpass of I-5 in the Lakewood area.

According to deputies, on Monday, there was a theft at a Chevron gas station on Union Avenue Southwest in Lakewood.

Friends of the theft victim were looking for the suspect involved and spotted him driving across the I-5 overpass.

When the victim and his girlfriend got out of their car, they confronted the suspect when he stopped in traffic.

Deputies said when the suspect tried to drive away, the victim was hit by the suspect’s gold minivan and drove away from the scene.

The 53-year-old victim was taken to an area hospital and later died.

Detectives are working to identify and locate the suspect.
