Homeowner arrested after man fatally shot in Pierce County

Midland home invasion

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Pierce County sheriff’s deputies said a man was shot and killed by a homeowner who confronted the victim and three others on a street outside his home Tuesday night.

The incident was first believed to have been a home invasion and then a property dispute, but after further investigation, deputies said it was neither.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, callers reported a shooting in the 7400 block of 20th Avenue East in Midland.

Police said a homeowner had shot a man outside. Deputies arrived to find the victim dead in the street.

Detectives said the victim and three other men arrived at a home to take back an ATV that had been traded for drugs.

Police said the homeowner initially left the house when the men arrived, but returned and confronted them in the street, before they went onto his property. He fired multiple rounds, striking and killing one of the men, according to investigators.

The homeowner was arrested and booked for investigation of second-degree murder.

Investigators said they suspect a marijuana growing operation is inside the suspect’s home. Detectives are working to get a search warrant.
