Pilot killed in helicopter crash in Clallam County

CLALLAM COUNTY, Wash. — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said a pilot has died in a helicopter crash Friday morning.

It happened in the remote West Twin River area, northwest of Lake Crescent.

Emergency dispatchers received a call at 7:40 a.m. about the crash of a UH1 Huey helicopter. The helicopter, which was conducting forestry operations in the area, was reported to have gone down after a flight crew mechanic received a radio distress call from the pilot, according to the sheriff's office.

At 8:52 a.m., a logger located the crash site and confirmed the pilot was dead. No one else was on board.

Authorities say the wreckage is located in a steep, wooded area with significant amounts of snow on the ground.

Deputies, county search and rescue, firefighters and the Washington State Patrol are at the scene.

The Clallam County Emergency Operations Center has been activated and has been in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration.
