Gun stolen in 1997 recovered after man shoots himself in leg

SEATTLE — Seattle police recovered a handgun that had been reported stolen in 1997 after a shooting investigation Wednesday night.

At 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to a hospital in the 700 block of Minor Avenue after a report of a man with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The 34-year-old man told officers he was in the Roosevelt neighborhood when some people approached him trying to sell him drugs.

The man said when he tried to walk away, he was shot.

A friend who brought the man to the hospital told police they were sitting in a car getting gas and the man had been playing with a gun and shot himself in the leg.

The friend showed officers the gun which was still in the car that was used to transport the man to the hospital.

Officers checked the gun and discovered it had been stolen in 1997.

The gun was placed into evidence and the Seattle police are investigating.
