SEATTLE — Homeless youth numbers in King County are now lower than they were last year.
"Homeless youth and young adult numbers in King County are down by over 25 percent for the second (year) in a row. From more than 1,500 last year they're now just under 1,100," Lee Castro, of the Youth Advisory Board, said Tuesday.
Castro said as a teenager she didn’t consider herself homeless but she found out that according to local agencies, she was.
“Homelessness can look all kinds of ways and it’s not always in a tent or under a bridge,” Castro said.
Local leaders credit massive fundraising efforts and campaigns as a big part in reducing the number of homeless youth.
Last August, Pearl Jam hosted concerts at then-Safeco Field and raised $10.8 million for almost 100 organizations working to fight homelessness.
"Once you start doing good, esteemable acts, hopefully those will repeat, repeat and repeat throughout society. And once again, we're just honored to be part of that," Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, said Tuesday.
