Food Lifeline holds charity concert to raise awareness for Hunger Action Month

Foodstock is a concert bringing music and community together to combat hunger at Meridian Park in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood.

All proceeds benefit Food Lifeline, an organization which aims to feed hungry people in Western Washington.

"One in five kids in western wa don't always have enough to eat. One in seven adults don't always have enough to eat. And last year, we fed 725,000 people," Food Lifeline's Mark Coleman said.

KIRO 7 PinPoint Meterologist Nick Allard also attended the event as one of the emcees.

As part of The Summer to End Hunger campaign in June, KIRO 7 partnered with QFC and Food Lifeline to help raise more than $40,000.

That money translates into stocked shelves that can be used for 160,000 meals for hungry people.

But the need doesn't end there.

"The problem is huge. We want people to learn about it," Coleman said.

The word is getting out, thanks in part to Shane Stone, owner of Stone's German Garage in Ballard.
He started the concert four years ago as an appreciation party for his employees.

Stone later had the idea to partner with Food Lifeline. And now, the fundraiser concert has grown, with 1,000 tickets sold this year, all of which benefit the charity.

"Everybody's heart was in the right place. It's taken a whole team of people. Takes a village, right? So I'm just very thankful to start something that has just taken off," said Stone.

Food Lifeline provides food to more 300 food banks, shelters and meal programs across Western Washington.

"We want to get people activated now here in September, make them aware of the problem as we move towards the holidays and people are starting to do things to help others. We want to be on their list," said Coleman.
