The grilling season in Western Washington is officially here with the arrival of the first batch of Copper River Salmon from Alaska into Seattle this morning.
Alaska Airlines is flying in about 64,000 pounds of the salmon today.
Local chefs waiting at the tarmac expect to be busy at their restaurants this weekend.
But if you are a home chef looking buy these Alaskan delicacies, be prepared to pay up.
KIRO 7 checked and this year’s supply of King Salmon on the North Pacific Coast is down between 20 and 30 percent.
And lower supply means higher prices.
At Pike Place Market, we talked with fishmonger Richard Hogue, of Pure Food Fish, and he said, compared to last year, he could be adding $10 to the price tag per pound. But he will do his best to keep the price down.
“We don’t want to be overly priced so the average person can afford it," he said.
