Fireworks light up Seattle after 2-year hiatus

SEATTLE — Celebrations across the Puget Sound rang in the New Year but none are more impressive than the fireworks at the Space Needle.

“We used to go on the roof and watch the fireworks show every year,” says Nick Hallock, who has enjoyed the show in the past.

The fireworks were canceled in 2020 due to severe wind and in 2021, due to the pandemic, things took a digital turn that many found to be a little less than exciting.

“It was the best they could do, I get that. But it was not great,” says Seattleite Constance Dorgan.

Seattle Center is encouraging people to stay away and to watch the fireworks from the comfort and safety of their homes.

But some revelers are still hoping to catch a live look at the show for themselves, like Keysha Redmond: “We’ve been inside for too long. We’ve been inside for way too long. So it’s like we want to be outside and we want to see.”

No one knows what the new year will bring but the hope, once again, is that we can find ourselves coming together without the barriers of the last two years.

“It’s definitely a special thing to see,” says Redmond. “It’s special for your kids to watch and just to share the moment with people.”
