FERNDALE, Wash. — A 39-year-old Ferndale man was arrested after attempting to have sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl.
According to a criminal complaint filed earlier this year, Christopher Johnston posted a personal ad to Craigslist asking for a “young lady to spoil.”
The complaint was filed in early May.
Johnston was arrested near the U.S and Canadian border Friday morning.
According to Western District Attorney Annett L Hayes, Johnston was traveling to British Columbia, where he believed he would meet the juvenile girl.
An undercover agent responded to the ad, indicating that he was the 12-year-old girl.
Johnston sent sexualized emails, texts and chats with the agent, ultimately arranging to meet in Abbotsford, B.C.
Johnston was arrested in the U.S while riding a bicycle, Hayes said. He was approaching the border near Sumas, Washington.
According to Hayes, Johnston sent a text to the undercover agent, who he believed to be the 12-year-old girl, saying that he was planning to cross the border illegally and meet her in Canada.
Johnston appeared in the U.S District Court in Seattle Friday.
He was charged with attempted enticement of a minor, punishable by a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison.
The case is being investigated by U.S immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Hampton.
