Facebook buying REI’s brand-new headquarters in Bellevue

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Facebook is buying REI’s brand-new, never used Bellevue headquarters for $367.6 million, the company announced Monday.

The purchase gives Facebook 400,000 new feet of office space, bringing the company’s footprint in the area to more than 3 million square feet.

“Our growth over the last decade is a testament to the thriving community and immense talent pool that has welcomed us with open arms. This purchase doubles downs on our investment in Bellevue and our commitment to the Pacific Northwest” Nick Raby, director of North American real estate said in a statement.

REI announced its plan to sell the headquarters back in early August.

The company said that rather than having a single location, its headquarters would span over multiple locations across the Seattle area, and it would lean into remote-working for its headquarters employees.

REI started building its new headquarters in 2018 and had an intended mid-summer 2020 move-in date before the sale was announced.
