Driver dies after crash on I-5 in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — A 44-year-old driver is dead after crashing into a transit bus on southbound I-5 Friday night in Lakewood.

Troopers said a vehicle was going at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a bus traveling 60 mph.

When first responders arrived at the scene, I-5 at 96th Street, they found an unconscious driver who was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center where the driver later died.

Authorities said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was believed to be driving under the influence.

The driver of the bus was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, troopers said.

Southbound I-5 was closed for two-and-half-hours for the investigation.
