Suspect dies after crash, shot fired by Des Moines officer

FIFE, Wash. — A domestic violence call in Des Moines led to a chase and the death of a suspect in Fife in which an officer fired at least one gunshot.

Police were called to the Des Moines Marina at about 12:45 a.m. Friday for a domestic dispute in which officers were told a man was armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, the suspect was leaving on a motorcycle. Police tried to stop the man, but he refused to pull over.

Police pursued the man until the 3400 block of Pacific Highway East in Fife, where he crashed.

At some point, a Des Moines police officer fired at least one round. Fife police chief Pete Fisher said a handgun was recovered at the scene, where the suspect died.

It is not yet known whether the suspect died in the motorcycle crash or from the officer's gunshot.

The officer who fired is a 21-year veteran of the force.
