Since the New Zealand mass shooting at two mosques in the city of Christchurch that killed 50 people and injured another 48, people in the Seattle community have been coming to Idris Mosque and leaving flowers and messages.

Saturday's prescheduled event was supposed to be limited to 100 people, but after the attack, the mosque opened the event to as many people as possible, and hundreds more registered.

The Seattle Police Department provided about a half-dozen officers at Saturday's event where people mingled in the mosque, prayed, learned about Islam and shared tea.

These events are nothing new - they've been going on since 1995.
