Community helps bring home Sequim man critically injured in attack in Mexico

SEQUIM, Wash. — A Sequim community rallied to help bring home a man who was critically injured while on vacation with his family last month.

In July, Willy Rookard and his wife, Christy, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in Cabo San Lucas with family and friends.

On the second night, the group was confronted by two men in a car, who pulled up to them. Christy Rookard said Willy started arguing with men in the car after he heard them talking about the women in the group. Willy Rookard was then pulled into and then dragged down the road.

Rookard was airlifted from Mexico to a trauma center in San Diego with a collapsed lung and severe brain injury. He's been recovering in San Diego since.

GoFundMe page was set up to help with international airlift and medical expenses. Earlier this week the Sequim community helped raise money to get him back home.
